The Therapeutic Relationship
Psychotherapy is a process where you and I will work together to identify

your strengths and set goals to help you address and overcome your

concerns. Therapy is a collaborative process where your input and

feedback are important and always welcome. I invite you to share with

me if you feel something is not working well, or if you feel like you

would like to try something different.

Session Format
Therapy sessions can be conducted virtually through a secure online platform or in my private office space and are 50 minutes in length. During the session, I may do one or more of the following:

  • Listen to your thoughts, feelings and concerns
  • Help you identify goals that will help you overcome obstacles that present a barrier to your overall well-being
  • Help you identify strengths and resources to work towards your goal(s)
  • Help you identify thoughts, feelings or behaviours that may be interfering with you reaching your goals
  • Use specific empirically proven interventions that are appropriate to your goals
  • Conduct formal and/or informal assessments to measure your progress
  • Suggest additional reading and/or homework assignments to maintain momentum or provide additional insight for therapy

Your Rights
You have the right to ask questions about your therapy. You have the right to provide input continuously throughout the therapeutic process. You have the right to stop therapy if you feel it is not working for you, or to ask for alternatives to what we are doing that might work better for you. You have the right to ask for a referral to another therapist.

Risks of Psychotherapy
All health care treatment carries a certain amount of risk. Psychotherapy can elicit uncomfortable emotions, as it can involve talking about unpleasant events in your history. We will be working together to establish goals that can help you overcome this discomfort, and sometimes therapy can feel difficult. This is normal, and you should feel supported through this process. Some people take more time than others to reach their goals, and this is also normal.

Confidentiality
Everything you disclose in the therapy session is kept confidential; however, from time to time and per regulatory guidelines, I may seek consultation from Laura Nicholson, C. Psychologist, to ensure that you are receiving the best support possible.  Any notes that either of us take are stored securely and will not be shared with anyone else. There are specific legal limits to confidentiality. If I believe that you pose a safety risk to either yourself or others, I am obliged to inform the appropriate professionals. I am also obliged to provide information, if requested to do so, through a court order.
